Section 1 - Purpose

(1) To provide the required resources and facilities for research candidates to successfully complete their degree.

Section 2 - Scope

(2)  Applies to:

1. All campuses
2. All staff, including honoraries
3. All higher degrees by research 
4. All students enrolled in a higher degree by research

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) When making an offer to a candidate it is important that consideration is given to the resources and facilities that will be required to undertake the proposed research.

(4) All candidates for higher degrees by research should be provided with the resources required to undertake the research including access to equipment and funding for materials.

(5) Full-time candidates should be provided with office workspace, desk, chair and lockable filing cabinet.

(6) All candidates should have:

1. A mailbox within the School;
2. Access to a telephone for work purposes during working hours;
3. Access to laboratory and other space required for conducting the research;
4. Access to School photocopying facilities at a level determined by the School;
5. Access to essential equipment and resources including computers with word processing packages and other software of relevance to the discipline;
6. Access to library resources including funding support to cover costs of obtaining library materials not available in the University Library;
7. Written information on the resources to which postgraduates are entitled and which the School is able to provide;
8. Information about access to counselling services, guidance in English language, computing and word processing skills and statistical advice, noting that these may be on a fee basis.

(8) For the purpose of this Policy:

1. Higher Degree by Research: Doctors of Philosophy (PhD), professional doctorates by research; and masters by research.
