Section 1 - Background and Purpose

(1) This Policy defines the Bachelor Honours and should be read in conjunction with the Australian Qualifications Framework entry for the Bachelor Honours.

Section 2 - Scope

(2) Applies to:

1. All campuses
2. All Bachelor Honours programs, including distance education and those taught off-shore 
3. Students enrolled in Bachelor Honours programs and staff involved in teaching, administering and supervising those students.

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) Honours programs will comply with the Australian Qualifications Framework descriptors. They will have learning outcomes at AQF Level 8.

(4) There are two types of Honours programs that comply with the AQF: 

1. One year following a three year EFT Level 7 Bachelor degree, or
2. Embedded in a four year EFT Bachelor degree with final year learning outcomes at AQF Level 8.

(5) Honours degrees are not awarded for meritorious performance in an award that does not have learning outcomes at AQF Level 8.

(6) Honours degrees are awarded in the classes:

Length of Honours Thesis

(7) Any written component of the honours year, for example a thesis, should be normally in the range of 12000 to 18000 words, and in certain disciplines will be substantially less.

Submission Date for Honours Thesis

(8) Where there is a thesis or major research report it should be submitted for examination with sufficient time for the candidate to be considered for PhD scholarship rankings.
