Section 1 - Background and Purpose

(1) The purpose of the Policy is to inform all staff, students and visitors to the University of the University’s commitment to providing and maintaining a healthy and safe environment.

Section 2 - Scope

(2) Applies to:

  1. All University Campuses and Research Areas.
  2. All University staff, students, contractors and visitors to the university.

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) La Trobe University is committed to promoting a healthy and safe environment and recognises its obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004.

(4) This will be achieved through:

  1. Providing adequate resources to develop and maintain an effective risk management and health and safety management system.
  2. Recognising and accepting as a minimum, all responsibilities imposed by relevant statutory and other requirements.
  3. Consulting with employees on health and safety issues through their Health and Safety Representatives and Occupational Health and Safety committees.
  4. Providing the necessary resources to monitor and advise the University community on risk minimisation.
  5. Development of policies, procedures for specific areas which will support this Policy.
  6. Ensuring Senior Managers are aware of their responsibilities within OHS legislation.
  7. On-going monitoring, evaluation and establishment of measurable OHS objectives and targets of OHS performance through the SEG Health and Safety Committee.

Responsibility for implementation – Health and Safety Committee.
Responsibility for monitoring implementation and compliance – Senior Leadership Team; Heads of School; and Divisional Directors.
