VET Courses Policy

Section 1 - Background and Purpose

(1) While the University is not classified as a dual sector institution, it has Registered Training Organisation status. In particular cases, the University may wish to approve the delivery of Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector courses by academic units of the University. This Policy outlines the criteria against which VET courses will be approved.

Section 2 - Scope

(2) Applies to:

  1. All campuses 
  2. VET programs
  3. All members of the University community

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) VET courses that meet the following criteria may be approved via a submission to the Coursework Committee:

  1. Unique capacity to deliver the course related to specialist knowledge and resources in the area (there are no other Registered Training Organisations with appropriate capacity to offer the program);
  2. Identified community need directly related to University strategic directions;
  3. Accreditation of the VET course through the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) or other relevant accrediting body;
  4. Potential for creating pathways to university study;

(4) As VET courses must have the curriculum accredited by the ASQA, the approval process for these courses involves a judgement as to whether or not they meet the criteria specified above.

Section 5 - Definitions

(6) For the purpose of this Policy:

  1. Registered Training Organisation is a vocational education organisation that provides students with training that results in qualifications and statements of attainment that are recognised and accepted by industry and other educational institutions throughout Australia.

Section 6 - Stakeholders

Responsibility for implementation – Coursework Committee.
Responsibility for monitoring implementation and compliance – Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).
