Admissions Policy

Section 1 - Background and Purpose

(1) This Policy outlines the principles governing the eligibility and selection of applicants to the University's coursework courses.

Section 2 - Scope

(2) This Policy applies to applicants for coursework courses at all campuses, taught in all study modes, including those courses delivered in partnership with external providers.

Section 3 - Policy Statement

(3) The University admits applicants based on merit, and makes offers of a place made to applicants assessed as having a reasonable expectation of success in their chosen course.

(4) The University’s application processes and entry requirements are transparent, equitable and clearly communicated to prospective applicants.

(5) The University’s entry requirements ensure that admitted students have the academic preparation and proficiency in English needed to participate in their intended study, and no known limitations that would be expected to impede their progression and completion. The entry requirements may include, but are not limited to, specific educational qualifications, prerequisites, work experience of folios of professional or creative work.

(6) Course academic entry requirements are:

  1. approved by Academic Board
  2. equivalent for domestic and international applicants
  3. consistent with the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), including entry level

(7) The University encourages participation from persons who have experienced disadvantage or are from a group underrepresented in higher education.

(8) The University supports pathways between AQF qualification levels and/or courses and reserves the right to establish targeted admission arrangements for La Trobe University students and graduates.

(9) The University gives due consideration to an applicant's prior study and experience, and awards academic credit in accordance with the Credit Policy.

(10) The University’s admission process ensures that students are informed of their rights and obligations before accepting or declining their offer.

(11) The University only admits students who are at least 16 years of age at the time they will commence their course.

Section 5 - Definitions

(13) For the purpose of this Policy:

  1. Applicant: A person who has made a formal application to undertake a course of study at La Trobe University but who has not yet enrolled in that course of study.
  2. Student: A person enrolled in a course of study at La Trobe University who has completed all the requirements for enrolment.
